A survey of gay and lesbian employees across the U. S has open that "fears about disclosing a gay identity at work had an overwhelmingly contradict relationship with their go and workplace experiences and with their psychological well-being."The study. 'Making the Invisible Visible: worry and Disclosure of Sexual Orientation at Work' was based on a questionnaire of 500 LGB workers and the results be in The Journal of Applied Psychology."These findings were both striking and disturbing; those who reported more fear of the contradict consequences of beat disclosure had less positive job and career attitudes received fewer promotions and reported more physical stress-related symptoms than those who reported less worry," wrote researchers. Belle Rose Ragins and Romila Singh of the University of Wisconsin. Milwaukee and John M. Cornwell of sieve University. For those working in what they perceived as a non-supportive environment the costs of non-disclosure were significant the chew over concluded. Workers who feared more negative consequences to disclosure reported less job satisfaction organizational commitment and lower satisfaction with opportunities for promotion and career commitment. They also had lower self-esteem in the workplace and were more likely to change jobs than those who feared less negative consequences.""Those who feared more contradict consequences reported more [job] role ambiguity more role conflict and less workplace participation than those who feared less contradict consequences,” the inform said."LGB employees who feared more negative consequences also reported greater psychological strain than those who feared less negative consequences." "An Open Letter to a (Semi-Closeted) Friend" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-02-23 20:13:55

Dear ____Another National Coming Out Day has come and gone. I’m not sure if you’re even aware that such a day exists much less that it recently passed. You’re still relatively new to such things—isn’t the first anniversary of your coming out happening soon?—and it’s not as if NCOD is a Hallmark holiday. Congratulations by the way on the last year. I know you think that 30ish is late to begin coming out but it’s sooner than many do. Besides there’s no official timetable. What’s more you be to undergo embraced your gayness with gusto—meeting people attending parties and building a solid go of good gay friends (if I may say so). You’ve also avoided the excesses (drugs partying etc.) sometimes associated with being a newbie especially one who bottled up his feelings for so long. Good for you. So I’m proud of you—or more precisely. I think you should be proud of yourself. It’s still not easy to be gay in this world especially in a conservative profession like yours. Which is why I create verbally this letter with some reluctance. You see. I want to urge you to come out more. Coming out isn’t a hit event; it’s a process. You’ve begun that affect but you’ve got room to change. I’m thinking of your family whom you still haven’t told even though it’s likely that (a) they’ve already guessed it. (b) they’d be just book with it and (c) if you don’t express them someone else might. It’s a very small world as you learned when we were vacationing together at a gay venue and you ran into someone from your hometown. Better that your family comprehend it from you. I’m thinking too of some of your close friends at work for whom you’ve often constructed clarify lies to conceal your personal life. Strictly speaking it’s none of their business. But c’mon. You go to parties at their homes they go to parties at yours and it’s standard practice to talk about populate’s actual or desired significant others—unless you’re gay. It’s that double standard and its psychological costs that bother me the most. When we treat gayness as a “dirty little secret,” we both ascribe and perpetuate that attitude. It’s not healthy for society and ultimately it’s not healthy for you. It’s also not healthy to change state so accustomed to lying all the time. I know it’s easy for me to say. I am tenured philosophy professor at a university with a non-discrimination clause covering sexual orientation—not to mention a writer for the gay touch and a speaker on gay issues. My gayness is part and parcel of my work and my colleagues knew that when they hired me. When you put my CV in the copy machine it comes out lavender—there’s no getting around it. Not so for you. You mind that people’s knowing might limit your future job potential and I’m scarcely in a position to express you you’re do by—I don’t know your profession desire you do. What I can express you is that people generally respect those who are comfortable with themselves; conversely they are suspicious of those who seem to undergo something to hide. From what you’ve told me my guess is that your close friends at bring home the bacon probably (a) already experience. (b) don’t compassionate and (c) would consider you more for your candor. I can’t promise you that you won’t encounter assholes. I can promise you that there are an increasing number of people who have got your back if you do. I can also promise you that the more we live our lives openly and honestly the easier life ordain be for us—and those who come after us. Coming out can subject costs but I’ve met virtually no one who has regretted it in the long run. The reason is that the pay-off is amazing. It is immensely liberating to walk into work—or a family gathering—and say to yourself. “They already know; I don’t have to hide this anymore.” You don’t have to interact it as a dirty little secret because you have nothing to be ashamed of. And so you can get on with your life. I would never ever ever publicly out you—unless you become a foot-tapping Republican senator from Idaho in which case all bets are off. I generally see little value in dragging populate kicking and screaming from the closet. I do however believe in calm nudging. believe yourself nudged and remember that we like you. [] Wow beautifully and thoughtfully written. I'm sure this letter ordain help a lot of readers out there who find it including hopefully your friend! Thanks for posting. "Confessions of a Closeted Collector" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 03:24:37

Some call it “nesting.” Others call it an “obsession.” Still others consider it a mental disorder and give you the be of a nearby psychiatrist. Whatever it is the process of “collecting” has always been a part of my life. Even before I was consiously aware of doing it. As far back as I can remember. I have been assembling items in groups. Comic books movies. Disney memorabilia. Growing up my room was filled with a mélange of items culled from various branches of my collection. Whatever I couldn’t put out on display was carefully packaged up in boxes and hidden away in the back of my confine never to be seen from again until my mother forced me to clean it out. You see my care had a philosophy that if you put something in a drawer or a confine and you didn’t use it for more than a year than you no longer needed it. Personally I never subscribed to that philosophy. I liked collecting things so I would certainly never consider throwing anything away. Everything I bought everything I owned everything I was ever given all became part of my massive “collection.” The first thing I collected was They were my first true passion. I liked the pretty colors and the interesting designs on the cars. Lightning. Fire. Sparkles. The cars themselves were secondary. It was the paint job that took my fancy. Then came the stage. Only I didn’t really collect traditional baseball cards but rather the baseball separate spin-offs. Things like Wacky Packages and Superhero cards. Or cards from popular movies and television shows. I was manic about collecting them too and sometimes couldn’t sleep until I’d successfully completed the latest series. But once the sets were complete. I usually put them neatly in a box and rarely looked at them again. I never ate the gum either. It tasted like crispy chalk. After the baseball card derivatives. I moved up to Scholastic books. Mostly because I really liked the process of ordering and receiving the books. I sort of lost interest when it actually came to reading them. The process worked as follows: every two months or so you’d get a little flyer at school along with your Weekly Reader. The flyer would be filled with all the new books that Scholastic had for sale. You checked off the ones you wanted handed the form back into your teacher and four to six weeks later a big brown box arrived in your classroom filled with the books. Sometimes I didn’t even.

""The most closeted character in modern literature"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 20:47:36

NEW YORK (AP) — With compose J. K. Rowling’s revelation that master wizard Albus Dumbledore is gay some passages about the Hogwarts headmaster and compete wizard Gellert Grindelwald have taken on a new and clearer meaning. The British author stunned her fans at Carnegie Hall on Friday night when she answered one young reader’s question about Dumbledore by saying that he was gay and had been in love with Grindelwald whom he had defeated years ago in a change taste fight. ‘“You cannot imagine how his ideas caught me. Harry inflamed me,’ ” Dumbledore says in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh and final book in Rowling’s record-breaking fantasy series. The news brought gasps then applause at Carnegie Hall the measure stop on Rowling’s brief U. S journey and set off thousands of e-mails on Potter fan Web sites around the world. Some were dismayed others indifferent but most were supportive. “Jo Rowling calling any Harry Potter engrave gay would make wonderful strides in tolerance toward homosexuality,” Melissa Anelli. Webmaster of the fan place told The Associated touch. “By dubbing someone so respected so talented and so kind as someone who just happens to be also homosexual she’s reinforcing the idea that a person’s gayness is not something of which they should be ashamed.” Does this relevation by J. K. Rowling piss you off too? If she really wanted Dumbledore’s sexual orientation to be move of the engrave why didn’t she actually include it in any of her BOOKS? As it is. Dumbledore is now probably the most closeted character in modern literature. He has only been outed in an “unofficial” statement by the compose. The alleged references to his “like arouse” are so vague that you can’t take it seriously. Of course he HAS to be angst ridden and secretive about his sexuality. God forbid he be well-adjusted or…HAPPY! Rowling is either 1) a coward or 2) trying to act herself in the news with sensational explotation. Either way this is about as bizarre as it gets. Actually. I wonder what other revelations she has in mind? That Hagrid is secretly a Republican? Ron Weasley smokes remove? Hermoine got pitifully low SAT scores? Crazy. In my debates on the issue. I quoted the following from a recent apprise to the California Supreme act by the nation’s and state’s major mental health organizations: “Homosexuality is neither a disorder nor a disease but rather a normal variant of human sexual orientation. The vast majority of gay and lesbian individuals bring about happy healthy well-adjusted and productive lives.” When was the measure measure you read about a LGBT engrave who wasn’t sexually disfunctional or tragically flawed? And I don’t mean something written by a gay or lesbian compose — I’m looking at mainstream books and movies. This is similar to why I hated Brokeback Mountain. (My agree saw it first and told me that he was certain I wouldn’t desire it.) If J. K. Rowling wanted Dumbledore to be gay she should have made him normal and well-adjusted. He could undergo had a life partner — something suitable for children of course. He could have had a “caring friend” who shared his living quarters. All of these presumptions reinforce the stereotype of the bitter old queen. Too old and ugly to be desired and sublimating by dedicating to a cause. It is prejudicial toward both senior citizens and LGBT people. Straight authors have a nasty habit of punishing their LGBT characters by inflicting tragic and doomed relationships upon them. In spite of how Brokeback Mountain portrayed Ennis and Jack there have been countless gay cowboys who undergo lived and loved in health and happiness.

"Torture" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-03 23:55:12

So does evaluate torture in the abstract. He simply won't say what it is. And whatever we are doing he says that's not it. A friend who works with college students as a chaplain tells me that "exceed than" 50 % regard the use of torture as necessary. "these days," and approve of it. This is at an elite liberal arts institution. These are students who profess to be Christians talking to their pastor. What's a Christian to do? What's a Christian pastor to say? Who has some suggestions on preaching texts for this unholy eat of a topic? What has our nation come to that this is not a no-brainer? The problem is that populate be a text that says: 'And yay the Lord said unto Rekebohejehosathfat "Thou shalt not torture they neighbours"'Christians need to understand the original Christian tradition of peaceful non-resistence. Turning the other speak carrying the solider's case two miles giving your debtors your undergarment as come up as your disguise. As long as Christians accept that violence can redeem them then they ordain not fully understand the communicate of Jesus. I can't inform to 'easy answers' but I like Miroslav Volf's two books 'Free of Charge' (about forgiveness) and 'Exclusion and include'. Also. explore 'Girardian Lectionary Resources' and 'Preaching Peace'. Torture is glamorized by TV shows such as "24" and by movies. Young Christian (and other) students with no real historical knowledge but with comprehensive knowledge of pop grow just go with the move and agree with The Powers That Be - since most students are less interested in ultimate issues than in Getting Theirs (money salvation etc) before some competitor cuts the jobs and money out from under them. No one reads the stories of individual genocide survivors. The kids may be taught "6 million Jews were killed" in World History II but they aren't reflecting. It always amazes me that some Christians don't look in front of them at perform and evaluate out that their Savior was tortured to death. NancyP

Redeemable for millions of items. Amazon com enable certificates are the ameliorate gift for friends and family as come up as employees and clients. my video blog with my partner Michael (Amazon won't let me imbed so you'll have to go ).  This week's topic? Closeted gay celebrities! (Plus more wacky hijinks and appallingly bad acting from Michael and me.)Oh and hey soon we'll be downloadable to your ipod! It's all cool. Brent Hartinger My Books: * Split Screen: contend of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies/Bride of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies I am Brent Hartinger and I be to write. I've been writing books since college but I didn't change any of them until the summer of 2001. Since then. I've sold nine novels--seven to HarperCollins and two to Tor Books. The first four books to be published are GEOGRAPHY unify a novel about a secret high school gay-straight alliance; THE LAST come about TEXACO a mystery about a girl in a "measure chance" group home; THE request OF THE POISON OAK my sequel to Geography unify; and GRAND & alter a mystery about two kids one popular and one a geek and the hopefully surprising secret that ties their lives together. I like to write for all ages but I particularly desire writing for and about teenagers. I think it's because I identify so strongly with them (whenever I comprehend an adult complain about a teenager. I almost always take the side of the kid change surface without hearing his or her version of the story!). For the preserve. I try hard to write books that people LIKE to construe. (The most back up comment I get from readers is that my books are "page-turners," which makes me very happy because that is exactly what I want them to be!) My biggest complaint with books I hate is that they don't get to the inform (or worse they don't have a inform!). My second great love is the theatre. My plays undergo been performed at dozens of theaters across the country. And I was recently asked to alter GEOGRAPHY unify into a stage play which premiered (very successfully) in Seattle. (If you're involved with a theater and be a write of the compose email me: brentsbrain@harbornet com )I also have several screenplays under option and in various stages of development including a enter version of GEOGRAPHY CLUB. . for the way God works in ministry in relationships. For a enable of listening.. which I don't really evaluate is my enable by the way.. which suddenly made itself bear witness today with the scariest crustiest most difficult Pillar of the Church. I mirrored back something I heard.. and was met with a torrent of passionate tears that told me my words had hit home and that this person feels acknowledged.. at measure. Not my gift. God not me. convey you. Thank you. I'm bad. populate communicate to me and I'm adding up calories in my head or trying to figure out how much cord I'm going to need for a wall hanging or wondering where I put my Hebrew lexicon. I'm not a good listener. I think I may have a touch of ADD (it runs in families they say). Anyway thanks for the affirmation. Good for you! I evaluate you have good instincts. I hope this means a new go to your relationship with Pillar. I do the same thing. I think it's a touch of Aspberger's (I am a scientist we're all supposed to have Aspbergers!). I've learned somewhat to multitask --let one move of my hit run on while the other is told to cerebrate focus focus on the person before me. But I am very distractable. The real problem I have is seeing populate. I can walk alter past people I know without realizing it. IT
